Good question, and I hope that we are close to it. I have visited the Paterson centre here in Manchester a few times to see some of their work and they do some cool stuff zapping cancer cells with different drugs and different types of radiation. I also went to a company called Astra Zeneca who actually test their new cancer drugs on animals (controversial!) and find out amazing things that can be the future for cancer drugs.
Its also worthy to note that around 25% of colon and breast cancers can be prevented by physical activity? Thats a lot isnt it! Just for the sake of moving around.

Sadly I don’t think we are as close as we would like to think. There are many studies and drug trials trying to find a cure but it is certainly not a simple process. There are many drugs (chemotherapy) that can help reduce the cancer cells but these cause quite severe damage to the body as a whole. Bearing in mind the number of diseases that have been cured in the past i believe that a cure will be found eventually.
