• Question: If humans lived in extreme conditions, with only the simplest of essentials, could we evolve into a tougher species both mentally and physically?

I don’t see why not. It takes a lot mentally and physical to live in extreme conditions. Look at eskimo populations for example. They must tailor their entire lives to living in the extreme cold that they find themselves in.
They also have a very high fat diet (they eat a lot of whale meat and fat apparently!) but they also have a very low rate of heart disease, which you would normally get if you ate loads of fat, this could be seen as them evolving to cope with this? Not to mention the extreme cold and limited resources they have, they have to be mentally and physically tough as nails!
