• Question: What makes you stand out from the other sports and exercise/adaptation to environments scientists? Why do you think that your research deserves the £500?

Tough question! OK, I think it’s because I know what makes you guys tick and can make a real difference inspiring you to switch on to the fun of science. My special mix of science, adventure and having been a past athlete who walks the wlak and talks the talk can help show what a great quality of life answering some of the most important questions can really be! Science should be fun and it’s as much about the teacher as it is about the student. I bet I’d get any of you guys interested in physiology (the science of how our bodies work) if we all took off on a high-altitude expediiton to the depths of Peru! OK, so pack your ruck-sacks, we’re off right now; cool!

Don’t think I can beat Damian’s answer sadly! ha!
But like him, I want to make science and physiology more fun for you guys. I was late in coming to science and not many people I work with were always excited by science as a kid but suddenly got excited about it later on and now love their jobs!
I want you guys to look back when you are asked “what was your favourite subject at school?” and say SCIENCE, straight away.
I think this £500 will help you guys to learn and remember more, and hopefully you’ll all want to work with us in our labs in the future!

To be honest I think any one of the five of us would use the £500 in a worthwhile way. Also i don’t think any of us are actually here just to try and win the money but rather help young people get inspired to to be the next generation of researchers. My proposal for the £500 uses my undergraduate students to help create these educational films. Meaning that they will be something that young people relate to. All five of us could probably put together some good educational packages and also claim that we are able to relate to you guys. In truth the best people to get the messages across are people that are just a few years older than yourselves (19yrs) to come up with some really exciting and relevant ways of interacting with you all and filming what they do around the labs in the heat and altitude chambers.
