I think you guys might not like science in school probably because you’re not motivated. OK, so how do we motivate you so that science becomes “important”? That’s a tough one to answer but for me, science became important to me because I wanted to run fast, super fast, in fact I wanted to be an Olympoic athlete. So I had to understand how my body worked to optimise my performance. I couldn’t afford any of these super-expensive coaches that exist nowadays and besides, I was a beginner without a track-record! So I took more interest in biology to learn how my body works…chemistry so that I could figure out what foods I need to eat…and even physics/biomechanics to understand what equipment would help me run faster! Most if not all top-end athletes, whether they’re a scientist or not, are very sharp thinkers and very switched on; I guess you need to be to become successful. So for me it was like a light switch; things starting to become super important and relevant and there was no turning back! If you can make science a hobby it becomes fun too. In fact, I get into trouble with my wife because I spend too much time doing science; I never used to get into trouble before for doing too much homework! Wow, how times have changed eh?!
I don’t think it’s motivation. I didn’t like science at school either! I actually think it is about relating to something you are interested in. For me i wanted to be a professional rugby player before I was injured. So i was keen to know how i could train in the best possible way and what things happened in the body to cause these training adaptations.
What things are you interested in? I bet science is involved in some way?
